So far, this year has popularized many online games. However, one in particular has taken the students of Andover Central by storm. Block Blast, a modernized version of the beloved arcade game Tetris, is a free mobile game that has grown rapidly in popularity over the past few weeks. Although it falls into the category of a puzzle game, students are fascinated by the unwinnable nature of the app. What started as a fun way to pass time has turned into a genuine obsession for many.
Junior Adison Young downloaded the game not too long ago, but since then she’s grown to love it. “Block blast is life. I’m always playing it. I once spent three hours on the game in one day. It helps me get through my day. Work Day? No. Block Blast day. It gives me the extra boost I need to get through the day. What’s my high score? 25,594 without a revive. It’s all I do at school; it’s all I do at home. Not answering my phone? I’m Block Blasting. Without Block Blast I would not have a life. It is my life,” she shared passionately when asked what the game means to her.
Another student here at Central has a similar opinion of the app. Senior JT Short said, “Where do I even begin? Block Blast is a powerful being that has changed my perspective on the word game because it is not just a game, it is a lifestyle. I play two hours a day at least. I skip breakfast to spend my time with Block Blast. My friends have even said I spend more time with Block Blast than I have with any woman, and I agree. I have been on more dates with Block Blast than I have with a female. If I am at dinner with my friends, I opt out of the chatting aspect so I can up my high score. When I am aggravated and angry I will play to calm myself down. Yuno Miles once said, ‘How you want got no tissue in here,’ and this quote is significant because block blast has brought me to tears. The emotional roller coaster that is Block Blast can change a person. This game is a livelihood and has a spot deep in my heart. Block Blast is a lifestyle and a friend.”
In an age where technology rules and attention spans are depleting, it is no surprise that a game such as Block Blast has become of widespread interest. Although the game is certainly popular right now, we can’t help but wonder what game will ride the wave of trends next to wash away all of this excitement.
